Friendly reminder that the Duckbill Platypus is not beaver sized but the tiniest most cutest patootie being in existence
i thought these things were the size of like, large cats or something. ITS FUCKING TINY JESUS
1. Males average 50cm total length, females average about 43. Size varies regionally, so they can grow much larger than what’s seen here.
2. The males, in particular, may look cute, but you do not want to mess with one. They produce a venom, which is delivered via a spur on the back foot. This venom is powerful enough to kill a dog, or cat, and can incapacitate a human. There’s also evidence to support the notion that after recovering from the initial envenomation, humans develop an increased sensitivity to all pain.
This increased sensitivity can last anywhere from a few days, to months. On top of that, the initial wound itself will be in persistant pain for days, to months, and doesn’t respond to pain medication, up to and including morphine.
There was a war veteran in australia, Keith Payne, who was caught by one’s spur, and described the pain as “Worse than being struck by shrapnel”. Over one month later, he still described pain in that hand. 15 years later, he still reported stiffness, and discomfort in that hand while doing everyday activities, like using a hammer.
Just because things in Australia look cute, doesn’t mean they won’t mess you up.
